Hi everyone, so I saw that you can propagate osmanthus by sticking cuttings into water and letting roots develop. I have been letting this go for a while now and there are biofilm looking things, is this okay or is there anything I should do differently? I have just been letting these cuttings sit in the water and shining light on them.

I would take them out and clean the gunk off under tepid running water, and change the water whenever it starts to look even slightly discolored. I’m also not sure if I’d leave those rolled up paper towels or whatever that is. How tightly packed are those? Ideally you don’t want to cut off all airflow or trap too much moisture around the stem.
Just change water every 2 – 3 days, or you’ll start growing algae in it.
Use opaque containers that don’t let sunlight touch the water. Change water weekly. If it keeps going slimy and the stems turn soft you can cut off the soft part and try rooting it in perlite or moss instead.
