Nicholas and his gardening club friends
Nicholas the Scarecrow has won a new honour for St Nicholas at Wade CE Primary.
Created by the school’s gardening club team of pupils and staff, he was awarded runner up spot and adorned with a rosette by judges of this autumn’s scarecrow trail at Walmer Castle near Deal.
The competition for schools around the region was to design and create an impressive scarecrow to ‘guard’ the historic centuries-old castle as part of an English Heritage fun initiative.
Twenty finalists were chosen to be on display to visitors who were invited to opt for their favourites.

After catching the attention of the public Nicholas was awarded his honour and has returned to school in triumph.
Head Teacher Taralee Kennedy said: “The school is thrilled. We took part as a fun design challenge and our gardening club team got their heads together and came up with a striking character.
“The theme this year was Remembering Heroes and we ensured their scarecrow fitted the bill. His distinctive outfit included old photographs and many remembrance red poppies.
“Now that his tour of duty at Walmer Castle is over, Nicholas is proudly on display – and on guard – at the school with his rosette pinned to his school uniform outfit.

“We are happy to support English Heritage that does vital work ensuring important parts of our history are loving preserved for all to see, experience and enjoy.
“A huge well done goes to our gardening club pupils together with staff members Mrs Hall, Miss Cox and Mr Ford who head up each garden team.”
