Frances Bryant, LaRue Groth, Sharla Carlisle, Dottie Castleberry and Tracy Mulroy attend the Miraflores Garden Club meeting on Oct. 23.
Miraflores Garden Club met at the home of Frances Bryant on Oct. 23. The group was welcomed by beautiful floral arrangement designed by the hostess. The group was entertained with a luncheon and a talk and discussion by Santa Rosa County Extension Agent Josh Criss on horticulture.
The talk by Criss was very informative and detailed. The state-assigned a county agent specifically to the Panhandle because of our unique soil and climate which is different from the rest of Florida. Criss’s expertise is on environmental horticulture.
The club learned about the importance of the appropriate soil for our winter gardens and lawns. He discussed the types of garden plants which work well in a winter garden. Some of those are cabbage, kale and spinach. There are many types of flowers that do well in the winter months, such as pansies and daffodil bulbs.
Someone joked that if you see a plethora of yellow daffodils, it may be an indication that they are a Miraflores member. We learned that Criss coordinates the Master Garden program that meets at the Navarre Library. If you have specific questions, you may call him at the County Extension office.

After the talk, the group was mesmerized by the shrimp boat out in the water and the Blue Angels performing in the crystal blue sky. The garden club members mingled on the deck, as they were served a Chinese luncheon. Sharla Carlisle, Glee Booth and Tracy Mulroy were the food hostesses.
The Miraflores Garden Club meets monthly. The club members open their home for the meetings. The club may have up to 30 active members. It has been in existence since April 1965.The group is looking forward to floral arrangements by Celebrations, a holiday gift exchange and discussions on native plants.
The next meeting will be held at the home of Pamela Schutzman on Nov. 20. For further information, one may contact Dottie Castleberry, president, at dotsyc@gmail.com or LaRue Groth at (850) 375-8013.
