I bought a fern(?) a long time ago. I’ve begun to suspect I’m allergic to something in my apartmemt, and I doubt it’s the fern, but I figure this is a good time to identify an unexpected bonus-growing-thing that came with it: What the Hell is this weird fuzzy thing?

Thats an air root from your rabbits foot fern!
lol it’s a rhizome, basically a modified stem. More fronds will emerge from it, it’s how they spread
Rabbit’s foot fern? I don’t own a fern but we have one of these and work and that’s what a coworker calls it.
Confirming its a rabbits foot fern. They’re amazing. Look them up!
Other possible candidates:
1) I have a pretty big Midnight Blooming Cereus that’s slowly taking over my kitchen :3 maybe it made a bloom and I just didn’t notice? I know their blooms tend to release an obscene amount of pollen.
2) A box of 107-year-old books I was recently gifted that I realized I could smell from the couch the other day. They are now in a dedicated plastic box.
3) Maybe just from turning on the heat and having air going through a dusty hvac system? But I’m not sure about this one, like; my heat has been on for weeks now.
4) Just… The losing battle I’ve been fighting in my apartment bathroom for years against mildew?
In any case, I know it’s November, but I’m noticing distinctly this week that I’m experiencing constant allergy /mild sickness symptoms, but today I made the connection that they dissipate when I leave the house. And I’m sick of being sick, so if something in my apartment is contributing, I want to finally identify it.
Here’s a close up of mine… with a new frond growing from the furry rhizome…

Make sure you do not bury the rhizomes and that the plant gets a good amount of humidity. Mine sits on a pebble tray. Also, don’t use a pot that is overly deep. Their roots grow out more than down.
omg is that a rabbit’s foot fern?? my roommate has one and it has those fuzzy little rhizomes that look like lil paws.
Deffo a rabbits foot fern
fern reproduce by spores so if you are spore sensitive it might be it.
I love Rabbit’s Foot ferns.
