Poster says it is 9 feet tall, 8 feet wide, coming in a 25 inch pot with a sturdy custom support system, and is over 15 years old. Is this a fair price or should I try to negotiate?

Also would it be unreasonable to get this as a beginner houseplant owner? I definitely would not want to buy a plant that has been nurtured well for so long and do it injustice. I currently have a few very easy plants: succulents, bamboo, and a bromeliad. I live in a desert climate and have high ceilings and spots where it could get direct or indirect sunlight.

Youre looking for a beginner house plant and you want to buy a $1800 plant? I would try a smaller monstera first and see if you can take care of that. But hey! If you have the funding and ceiling like you said you do, then go for it!

  2. diddlinderek

Why not buy your own plant for $20 and enjoy watching this happen over the next 10 years?

  3. Mayflame15

Is the watermark on the photo the person that’s selling it or is someone using their photo to scam you out of $1800?

Monsteras are pretty cheap and widely available, I’d pick a $30 midsize plant and watch it grow rather than drop a small fortune on a plant that may not even survive the move

  4. Newbie10011001

Buy one half the size for $150 and it should size up to this in 18 months if treated well. Desert climates are not your friend here with its need for ok humidity

    **NOOOOOOOOOO**

This is a regular Monstera. At most, $800+ shipping. These grow like weeds here in Florida. People are encouraged to pull them off trees, out of ponds, and off the sidewalk. Mature versions about 1/2 this height are available to purchase for $300 at wholesale nurseries by Miami. Some greenhouses, HOA’s, and businesses will even let you take them for free because they grow and take over so quickly. If you don’t believe me check your local Facebook Marketplace or landscaper.

    They are weeds.

To put it in perspective, it’s like someone showing you a picture of an old tabby cat, and saying the price is $1,000 because it comes with a collar and kibble. You can literally find them on the street anywhere.

    I got a 6.5’ tall + 4’ wide monstera for $30 off marketplace. No, it’s not worth $1800…

(I guess technically anything is worth whatever you’re willing to pay for it but that’s a ridiculous price)

  7. theseboysofmine

Hell no. The only person that’s buying that for $1,800 is a sucker. They are so easy to take care of. On the other hand it is not easy to get the leaves that big. If you live in a desert I doubt your house has the humidity to keep that large growth. You’re going to be very disappointed when you bring that home and all of your new leaves are half the size of those. Also that plant will go into shock when it moves and you’re going to lose foliage. It will not be that big pretty plant after a month in your home. Get a small one. You can find monstera everywhere. Pay 50 bucks for a well-established plant.

  8. PettyTrashPanda

First off that’s a stock photo unless they are selling it in Canada.

Secondly you could buy a six-ish foot tall one for $200. This is a scam.

  9. Feisty-Honeydew-5309

I would never pay that much for any plant regardless of rarity or maturity. Where is the joy in nurturing and growing the plant?

  10. SayThat3Times

Nope… u can literally get one for $100 ( for a large form) and get it to grow like that…

  11. No lol

    Not even close

This is a few years of growth for sure, but its not exactly hard to do it yourself…

You’re going to have plants in all stages of growth anyways, so theres not point spending almost 2K on a mature plant. Unless you explicitly own mature plants for some reason lol

This might be worth it to someone in film/entertainment or the like. Who need a large monstera immediately for some peculiar reason (as in a prop for a movie/show, or decor for a video/tour. Something like that). Of course that’s not generally coming out of any one person’s pocket though

Anyone else should just be growing the plant themself in my opinion. Monstera are pretty easy

  12. not_blowfly_girl

Dont pay 1800 for any plant if you are a beginner. You will kill a couple plants as a beginner and you should start with cheap ones

  13. ExcitementWorldly769

No Jesus no. You are buying something than in any tropical country is essentially a weed. Get a cutting somewhere else and grow it.

  14. Counter_Clockwise345

My monstera is hitting the ceiling too… it’s a cutting of a cutting of a plant that my ex found on the sidewalk with a “please give me a home” sign. That’s to say they’re easy to come by, easy to grow, and IMO not worth that kind of money. Plus it’s going to start growing into the ceiling and getting mangled almost immediately… that and even moving it would likely result in significant damage.

  15. I’m not a beginner houseplant owner and I wouldn’t even pay that much for any plant. It’s beautiful don’t get me wrong but it’s just a generic/basic monstera. It’s extremely overpriced and you could get one like half this size for probably $100.

  16. Serious_Ride_6623

No plant is worth $1800 unless it has $1790 buried in it’s soil.

  17. DistributionDue8470

“Would it be unreasonable to get this as a beginner plant” Yes.

There’s going to be a massive shock period from moving this thing that could possibly kill this plant or make it lose A LOT of growth. It’s not worth it for a regular monstera. Not at all.

  18. Technical_Visit8084

Not even slightly close. But it depends on how one values money and return on investment.

  19. Findpolaris

You have $1800 to spend on a plant? Would you consider donating it to the poor lol

  20. SandwichAnnual1414

Hell no with really good lighting and fertilization you could literally get that from like a 16$ starter in like a year and a half- two years

  21. Just buy a normal sized one at any big box store and spend money on grow lights!

  22. PM_me_punanis

Without having to google anything, the picture and price alone is triggering my scammy senses. Also, if you are such a beginner that you don’t know the price of a pot of monstera, why would you even entertain buying a large specimen? None of this makes sense.

  23. Civil_Cauliflower_41

If your new to plants. Don’t do it. Grow a lil on yourself

  24. duderroneus

The thing only has secondary fennies, for 1800 you should at least have tertiary or more in holes.

  25. countingc

What you might not understand is that this plant could be worth it because of the care that went into growing it, but it might also drop so many leaves once it gets to your home because you might not give it the optimal growing conditions that it has received its entire 15 years.

    GROW YOUR OWN PLANT

  26. It’s worth is whatever *you* put it as. Assuming you’re the buyer. Do you want it enough and have the cash to spare?

  27. Nah, its much more satisfying to grow you own and work it into your space. If you had a huge garden full of big tropical plants already then I’d say go for it if you have the funds, but if you’re a beginner please just buy a small one and learn with it.

  28. Beautiful_Mind9015

If I were you I would buy some smaller plants at a nursery or wherever and start with those.

  29. DannyDidNothinWrong

Lord, why do stupid people get all the money

  30. Nelloyello11

I think this is a scam. I’ve seen this exact plant/picture in multiple posts by multiple people in at least one Facebook houseplant group I’m in.

  31. nismoasfuh

This has to be a troll post. People on this sub are way too nice lol
