Dear Redditors,
I'd like to grow a climbing rose up the left side of my house. I want to grow it vertically first and then horizontally under the windows on the first floor. I'm looking for a red, repeat-flowering climbing rose that can grow quite high.
The height to the bottom of the first floor is approximately 3 meters.
I'd like some advice on which type of climbing rose would be best for this. I've been considering the following options:
– Santana
– Florentine
– Red Eden
– Saint Paul
– Red Flame
– Etoile de Hollande
– New Dawn Red
- I was also wondering if the left side is suitable in terms of width relative to the neighbor's door (approx. 50/60 cm of the house).
- Is the footprint of the planting hole large enough, at approximately 50 x 30 cm?
My house faces southeast.

You would definitely want a vigorous rose that’s able to reach 5m+ if the aim is to get it all the way across the window. I haven’t checked all the details on the roses you suggested but potentially consider ramblers if you can’t find a climber that can do this. The width should be fine as long as you are going to be around to maintain it. I’d probably limit the plant to only 4 stems at the base.
The planting hole should be fine but just make sure to give it plenty of water in the first couple of years.
ohh I just wanted to ask where in the UK do you get beautiful houses like that then saw your username and realised 🙁
I have a lot of luck with Rambling Rector. It’s very rigorous though, possibly too rigorous? It’s not a repeat flowered, but it is stunning when it is in bloom.
I have a potted rose that I inherited. I have it growing over a full length window at the front of my house.
One thing I would suggest is having it growing from both sides of the window if possible.
This year was my first year trying and it looked so weird having half the window in full bloom looked lopsided. I took some cuttings and hopefully can add the other side next year.
The hole is more than big enough. Here’s an old neighbours one in Brussels

Red flame or etoile de hollande will probably be nice choices as they have a strongish scent. I order all of my roses from Belle Epoque and never been disappointed. They have a nursery in Aalsmeer!
