Native Garden Design for a Dry, Sunny Location

Watch me design a native plant garden in an island-shaped gardening bed, perfect for dry soil and full sun conditions. This design was created for a customer in Virginia who wanted drought tolerant species and beautiful blooming perennials visible from every angle. Our star plant today is little blue stem, a native grass that stands tall with blue green blades in summer and turns a rich copper orange in fall. Butterfly weed has bright orange blooms that attract monarchs and it thrives in lean sunny soil. Fairy drop seed offers soft fine textured grass and it also loves dry sunny soils. Blackeyed susans showcase bright yellow blooms that light up the bed and attract pollinators. Aromatic aster is the perfect late blooming plant that offers purple flowers with colors that carry well into October.
