I had a tree company come out and say it needs to come down (of course they want me to take it down, duh) and gave me a quote of $2500 to totally remove. They did not have an arborist with them. I’m not sure if it needs to come down or not. Occasionally small branches fall on the roof but nothing major (yet). The generator was just put in, so I’m not sure if line damage from the roots will be a concern going forward. Wanted to get some thoughts from the fine folks here. Thanks!

Is that vine or a crack in the trunk? There does seem to be some potential rot along the root line, so an arborist visit would be a good idea regardless. I would NOT use the door to door salesman though, not to mention that price is suspiciously cheap for this tree with the environment it’s in. http://www.treesaregood.org/findanarborist
For me, yes, you have to have it knocked down if you want to save your roof in the future (and more…)
Now I can’t see the crack clearly, could you give us a closer photo? Because strangely he seems in good health to me anyway…
There’s no crack, that’s a poison ivy vine. Nothing in these pictures worries me.
Looks like a mature healthy White Oak. It’s definitely too close to the house, the critical root zone has been compacted and compromised multiple times. There’s a lot of weight up there, and half of it’s potential area to fail is over delicate valuable property. That being said, it’s a magnificent tree. It just comes with some unmitigatable risks.
You need an arborist, preferably a TRAQ arborist to inspect this tree. Nothing in the photos seems concerning but an arborist on site can tell more and evaluate any damage from the generator install.
I mean if nothing else atleast take the poison Ivy off of the poor thing
Get an arborist. Its a beautiful oak. These are worth fighting for. Granted it is close to your house. Id reccomend a Traq 2 inspection
