About 4 1/2 years ago, I decided to transplant a little tree from the woods behind our house to the front yard. It took surprisingly well and is now close to 15 feet tall. It’s some kind of maple.

I trimmed off a really severe co-dominant leader two years ago and the dominant straightened out beautifully, but this year I noticed another suspicious branch. Is it worth cutting back? It’s a significant portion of the tree so I’d plan to trim it 1/3 at a time over the next few years but I’m not sure if it’s worth the worry.

I say remove, the earlier you remove it the easier the tree is going to compartmentalize the wound. The tree is going to survive without that sucker. (I’m not a certified arborist but studying for the ETW)
