I actually had no idea it was so root bound until the wind blew another pot onto it and broke them both. Thanks for the heads up, Mother Nature. My dog was very concerned about all the commotion, as you can see.

Australian cattle dog! My best friend has 2 and yours looks just like her one. Pretty dog!

Wow is there even any soil left in that pot πŸ˜…

Cast iron pan as tool of choice made me chuckle, merely an oddly shaped hammer head that’s allπŸ˜‚

Could have left it another week and the plant would have broken it itself lol.

That is an impressive level of rootbound!

I love how dogs have no idea what’s going on but try to support as much as they can

The first time I repotted my ZZ plant, it was so root bound that I had to use scissors to break and remove the little plastic false bottom/draining plate in the pot. As I was doing so, I realized there was *another* nursery pot further in the roots… Someone else before I got the plant must have just stuck the small nursery pot in a larger pot and let the roots grow around it 😭 After a few intense moments I freed the plant and repotted it properly, and it’s doing much better now lol.

Next time, soak the pot in water first. The terra cotta absorbs water and expands.

In this case is it recommended to break up the roots to replant? I’ve seen people say both, “Leave it. You’ll damage the roots breaking it up” and “Break it up. Better airation and soil contact outweighs the damage”. Or like most cases does it depend on the severity and type of plant/hardiness of roots?

This makes me question my life choices.Β  I planted mine in a pretty ceramic pot.

… maybe I should put it in a nursery pot

OMG! That dog and the look of concern on her face! Just the cutest. Those are some serious roots! Glad you figured a way to get it out of the pot.

I’m going to have to do this with my highly etiolated syngonium at some point… of course I had to get a cute cat planter with a tapered neck that I’m loathe to smash
