1st picture is of the root flair still not exposed after digging about one foot. Hoping that slight curve means I’m almost there but there’s also quite a few other trees buried including a large white swamp oak. Closest tree in the background has been partially exposed already after I removed hostas, and periwinkle, the latter of which was disposed of. Anyways does anyone have any tips on digging these guys out? Or you know just pray for me. And yes those hostas in the background were around the tree… there are 4 other trees being held hostage by them, I’ve been getting rid of them by the bucketful to willing neighbors. Also what encourages people to do these things?

Why do we think that root flair is so important on trees that look very healthy and must be decades and decades old? This stuff has gotta be overstated.
Even the hostas, do we really think some surface plants are going to take enough water away from this mighty oak to the point that it will die? Why wouldn’t the hostas die before a tree with deep thick roots?
