I've never grown cactus before but I used to live I a share house with some enthusiasts…

Do I need to think about it much more than simply filling a terracotta pot with cactus mix and laying them cut side down? Is it advisable or inadvisable to bury a couple of spike nodes deep? Is there any point to giving them a bit of rooting hormone powder?

No point in rooting hormone, they grow like a weed.. I my tip is dry soil for rotting and slightly adding moisture until full watering after about 3 months

You can fresh cut a sliver of the bottom and apply sulphur powder and rooting powder mixed up onto it. If you want to use rooting hormones. That’s what I do, dont care what anyone says, I have the extra 5$ and coming from an extensive background in plants and fungi, I like my hormones.

Wow that’s quite the haul. Looks like you got a variety pack. Where’d you get all those?

BTW – For some of the longer ones, you could plant it sideways. It’s called log style and new pups (branches) will grow vertically from it, and the tip too. I always bury them like a third of the way up or a bit more just so they won’t roll over and break new roots.

There’s a saying, “cacti thrive from neglect.” It just means leave them alone while waiting to root to the point of kinda forgetting about them and it’s always better to underwater than overwater. They’re like little organic water towers so they can go months without watering while you wait for the roots to grow. Watch a bunch of YouTube videos, read old reddit & Facebook posts, & read a bunch of articles to learn as much as you can. It’s a really rewarding hobby.
