This rotten branch broke off of my heritage oak. Should I make a clean cut on the remaining limb down to the branch collar? I know the tree is not in great shape but it's the last heritage oak on our property. I'm just trying to keep her alive as long as I can. On top of that there's a bee hive in the trunk, which greatly complicates things.

xD ima be real with you you can leave that guy alone it ain’t long for this world
I see it 2 ways. You can wait for it to fall on the fence and have it cut down the whole tree is dying and pay 1 time for trip out
Or you can just cut the limb and look at it for another year or bad storm and it fall over and cost you triple of doing it now
Tree is dead and if it falls on fence now you I have to deal with bith and fixing fences isn’t cheap
That sucks at 1 time. That was a gorgeous tree back in the day it has been struck by lightning and that did it in long time ago was on borrowed time
I wouldn’t. You might expose a previously compartmentalized section of the xylem. The purpose of pruning to the collar is to make it easier for the tree to seal the wound. This tree is in such a state of decline, that it is unlikely to do a better job than it already has.
No
Just cut it clean near the break. Tree looks great. I realize it’s in really bad shape. But it’s a thing of beauty anyway. Has tremendous character.
