



Context: ~6year old chilatpa. Flowers are pink. Shade tree given by SUMD in sacramento. Zone 9b.
Last 2 years had squatters and renters so prob never watered. Still acts healthy and grows vigorously. Few borer holes so on its way out however slowly.
Question: what made a split this big? Underwatering in 100 degree weather do this even while it's growing strongly? Split is 4 feet tall and easily 4 inches into the tree either side

Ugh. All I can see is that redwood across the street, in gravel. How many years before it’s dead?
Anyway, there’s no root flare so [planted too deeply](https://imgur.com/gallery/HKr1Odp) or grade changed. Maybe it will recover, thousands of posts on the tree subs from homeowners uncovering the root flare. That’s one tough mother!
