I live in the southeast US and I've been finding these for a couple months. I only find one at a time and they are usually always partially unripe and/or look like they've already started going off.

The photo I took of one I cut in half was already after I had forgot about it for 4 days in the fridge so not what it looked like the day I picked it up.

They are firm, slightly waxy, almost like an apple and all of them have tiny little white spots on them.

I just about always find them in close proximity to oak trees. I've found them in places 20+ miles away from each other. Despite that I look up and look at the surrounding trees and plants but don't see anything similar.

    do they stink? if so im thinking ginkgo trees but their leaves are also very recognizable also really pretty in the late fall
