Why did this tree fall?

It just started to bend, then fell (on the power lines) last night. It's either a big tooth Aspen or a maple (both kinds of leaves were left behind by the crews, as the big tree fell on a smaller one).

I'm in Maine and we've had a severe drought this summer, but I've never seen a tree that seemed healthy bend then rip apart like this.
