I recently had an old stump taken out in my yard here in Canberra, and I thought I’d share the experience since I see a lot of questions about dealing with leftover stumps.

The tree had been removed years ago, but the stump kept sprouting and was starting to attract pests. Instead of digging it out (which would have torn up half the yard), we went with grinding. The machine basically chewed the stump down below ground level, and now the area can be leveled out and replanted.

It was surprising how quick the process was, but it really showed me how tricky stumps can be if left too long—they get tough, and the roots spread far.

Has anyone else in Canberra gone through stump grinding? Did you leave the grindings to break down as mulch, or clear them out completely before replanting?

Not in Canberra, but my experience grinding (a lot of) stumps, is you need to remove most of the grinding and replace with topsoil, if you want grass. You’ll have areas of scorched earth because it is just mulch when you’re done.
