Seen in north New Jersey, USA, but not sure if this is native. The town planted this a little while ago, but this is the first time I noticed fruit from it as it was smashed all along the sidewalk. I thought I found the answer from someone else’s American persimmon post yesterday, but then realized the leaves are different from that one.

Ginko https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginkgo_biloba
A very ancient species
Ginko – reeks of vomit.
It’s horrible.
The town where I grew up made the mistake of planting lots of them along the old city walls. If you walk past them you can throw away your shoes afterwards. We tried everything but never got rid of the stench again.
It’s a girl! Gingko
When I lived in Japan they ate the seeds boiled.
One day this fall, after you have enjoyed the gorgeous gold leaves for a while, you will wake up to find the tree naked with its leaves spread all around the sidewalk. All at once. Crazy.
Stink-o ginkgo!
Ginkgo berries. Be careful, the moment they start to rot, your area will reek of vomit.
Ginkgo
Ginkgo it’s a needle not a leaf lol
They had these trees all around the oxford circle area of Philadelphia. There’s a certain time of year they start to stink real bad.
A female Ginkgo biloba. They are horrifically messy and stink to high heaven!
Not native to the US. Has male and female versions – only the female makes these fruits. When ripe, there is a hard nut inside that is edible. But the fleshy outside gets goopy and stinks to high heaven. Very messy. Do not get one. Ginko
What the heck would eat this / how does it spread its seed? Maybe the odor is enticing to large reptiles. Certainly doesn’t work for us & I don’t know if other mammals would touch it.
Ginko. They smell like vomit when they fall and ripen in the sun. They are all over the ground at the old USFK headquarters at Yongsan garrison in Seoul.
Do NOT handle the fruit! It contains the same poison that is in poison ivy. Also, they don’t smell good. Very few ginkgo trees are female for these reasons.
Stinky rotting poop fruit. We had one outside our dorm. People would walk through the fruit on the sidewalk and grind it into the hallway carpeting. Naaaaaaasssty!
gingko fruit stinky but yum
