The homeowner removed the border around two Maple trees 18 months ago and the root mass is 5’ wide and 14” high on the front side. Is it even possible to do a root excavation with an air spade on such a massive mound? Can you prune the roots down to an acceptable level? Is it even recommended?

What a mess. If it was mine I would slope the sides down to the existing yard and do a partial retaining wall in the front of it. It would be very difficult to knock that mass of roots down. It would not be good for the tree either.
When I had my driveway extended, I had to pay to have the topsoil removed. I would try and find a business that has excess topsoil that they need to get rid of and dump it all over that thing.
I’d probably try to sort of split the difference on the big step down. If I could just rake down the highest part of the edge and that fills in the low area until it’s smooth. Might actually end up adding some dirt in front to get it all smoothed out.
I’d get an air spade out just because I’m curious what’s in there.
For once, it wasn’t buried too deep.
