I started AVs from seeds on June 17th. And I'm excited to share that I finally have some buds!!
You can find the specifics of my care and lessons learned in my previous posts:
I started out with about 85 germinating, and I am down to 45. I lost most of them by a mistake I made in Post 4, but I lose an average of 1-3 a week for other reasons.
As you can see from the pictures, there is a wide variety of sizes amongst the seedlings. The seedling with buds was always the biggest and strongest seedling.
There are a few others with the beginnings of buds forming.
Some lessons learned since last post:
- Once the leaves get to be about the size of a quarter, their growth rate increases rapidly
- Some of them will just die, no matter how hard I try to stop it. As mentioned above, I categorize these as crown rot (I planted some of them too deep, and some I think may be over-fertilization), or they just stop growing and then whither away.
- Base sun exposure on leaf color. Some of the seedlings are a little bit sunburned because they were too light to be in as much sun as they were in. The lighter the leaf == the less sun exposure.
- Rotate fertilization every other watering or wick change. I think this is why some of mine died, but I'm not 100% sure.

I love this seed saga so much! Great job, I can’t wait to see the colors you get🥳
This is so exciting. Can’t wait to see the blooms. Carly Simon’s *Anticipation* is now on repeat in my head.
thanks for posting! what seeds were they/variety?
Do you mean that if the leaves are light colored, you need to dial back the sun due to bleaching. or is it that the leaf variety is light to begin with which means you should lower the exposure to light?
They’re not even 4 months old and they’re making buds?? That’s really good growing!
Edit: I wonder if it has to do with the time of year? I sowed mine at the end of December and they’re just starting to bud up now 🤔
