”Just water it” – this statement leaves out so many details about exactly needs to be done and what the plant actually wants. When the Ctenanthe burle-marxii ‘Amagris’s leaves curl up on both sides, it indicates that its soil is compacted and dry. Pouring in a lot of water may help but with compacted soil, much of the water will simply drain away, leaving pockets of dry soil where the roots are dying. Aerating the soil gently with a chopstick creates channels where water and air can more easily penetrate compacte soil. A thorough soaking in combination with soil aeration is what needs to be done to restore good soil structure – the time lapse covers 3 days. Remember, you don’t have worms and insects in your house plants so you have to do the job of soil aerating!
