first off, i live in a college dorm in the northeast us so i can't necessarily put it outside (but i heard they want bright indirect sunlight so that should be fine). do i move her out of the pot she was given to me in? how much dirt does she need? is she healthy at the moment? what steps should i take? this is my first time caring for a plant in over a decade, so i want to give her the best life possible 😀

To answer your questions, African violets are an indoor plant, so don’t put her outside. Leave her in that pot for the first year. Repot her then. And repotting usually means potting her back into a similar sized pot, even the one she is in now. More about that next year. Light, bright indirect light. What direction does your window face? Watering. Feel the weight of the pot when it has been thoroughly watered and allowed to drain for 15 minutes. When it feels light in comparison, time to water again. Water with room temperature water. Fertilize when you water, but at 1/4 strength of whatever it says on the bottle. The fourth time you water, don’t fertilizer. Use plain water to flush the excess fertilizer salts out of the soil. Best of Luck.
