Do you know the biggest mistake that home landscapers make? I’m here with Jay Cifford, a well-known garden designer in the Carolinas, and he’s going to share with us some insights. So, what’s the biggest mistake that you see when you walk up to a home? I think the number one mistake is uh is bedlines are just designed improperly. They’re too straight. If you look at your foundation plannings and it just runs parallel to the front of your house, you’re making a big mistake. Just like Josh is standing, what does it say when he has that body language? It means that he doesn’t want to have you come to visit. You’re not welcome there. But if you open your arms up now, it’s a very welcoming thing. So, quick fix then is to introduce some curves and to flare out at your sidewalk. I love that. And what’s an easy way to make that curve? Should I just draw a zigzag back and forth? No. That’s like the world’s curviest street in San Francisco. Not a good look for your home garden. You can lay out a hose if you want. Just a regular garden hose. Make broad curves, but make sure that the curves are continuous. Make nice wide curves and don’t do like a curve and then have it too straight and then start another curve. That’s no good. That’s some really good basics cuz obviously I need to work on my garden beds. If you want more garden design tips like this one, make sure to check out Sifford Garden Designs link below.

  1. I'm really jealous of your guys landscaping in the southeast/Midwest. In southern California it's not as good. Add in the watering restrictions. And you get these ugly neighborhoods we have.

  2. The biggest mistake is homeowners not realizing the maintenance cost to prune all the hedges, plants etc when the plants start maturing
