I planted my first milkweed this year. It came out horribly, and it looks quite sad now.

I have not seen a single butterfly nor larvae since the summer.

But… To my surprise, I noticed four chrysalises right next to it. Today, the first monarch came out.

Can anything be done with the swamp milkweed? Do I just cut it and let it regrow next year?

Have you been watering it? It is my understanding that swamp milkweed needs lots of water. You should look up native milkweed for your area, most likely common milkweed which doesn’t require extra water after the first year.

Wow that’s really cool. I have a lot of milkweed but no butterflies!

Im not sure the issue but I’m sure itll grow back next year. My swamp mw is on its 3rd yr and didnt need any extra watering. Mybe it’s too dense and has bad air flow.

  7. You didn’t see anything, but they did – well done.

I didn’t check my neighbor’s milkweed (A syriaca) but didn’t have anything on my tiny A tuberosa plants. Next year some swamp milkweed are getting added into the mix.

You did good! Next year more water. It’s called Swamp Milkweed for a reason 😎
