We bought a house last year and we have this beautiful tree. I believe it's a River Birch but I can be corrected. It has a massive 6-in knot/hole close to the base of the trunk that holds water. The tree is beautiful and I want to try to save it if possible.

I've avoided asking because it's probably not good news, but if there's any sort of procedures or the steps I can take to reduce damage and increase its life, it would be greatly appreciated!

Leave it alone. It’s fine. Have the tree inspected by a certified arborist.

Im no expert but I imagine if its not new, then the tree has healed/grown/accommodated it and will be okay

There is nothing to deal with. It’s fine.

Definitely fill it with concrete and no less than 7 inches of mulch.

Make a large wooden ball and put it in there.

That is where you put the river sir. Why else would they call it a river birch?

  7. my hypothesis. a lot of river birch are planted in clumps. the dominating leads strangle out some of the other leads. this lead got to be about 6” before it was strangled. this lead died, rotted and fell causing the hole. other than water gathering in there, i bet that tree is figuring this situation out on its own
