Hello all, I found this strange plant growing out of the spray foam I used to temporarily block a mouse hole in my barn in central Michigan. Any idea?

    wild lettuce grew without light.

people do that for white asparagus (Europe), white chive (China).

    interesting stuff

This plant was grown without light like everyone else says. The fun thing is humans use this as a method for some plants called “forcing”, which causes less chlorophyll and a leggy appearance. Handy for making things grow, you just need some heat and no sun, so you can make things like white asparagus.

Is that one in the foreground growing straight out of concrete?!

It’s not an exact match, but it looks awfully similar to the young shoots of globe artichokes/cardoons. I wonder if it’s related?!

Could be *Cirsium arvense.* Whatever it is, this is a shoot from a plant that most likely has healthy shoots from the same rootstock growing immediately outside the barn, so have a look which plants are growing there.

Don’t know about the plant, but I’d like to congratulate you for saving big money.

  7. Spray foam won’t work well. Use steel wool as it can’t be chewed through. Plant looks like dandelion leaves.

    They look like dandelions.
    Seeds carried in by mice.
They can grow several feet looking for light, and the leaves look like this when they don’t get any.

Are those needles at the tips of the leaves? Looks like a thistle to me.

It looks like a regular thistle that grew without light. I’ve had a few of them grow through the wall of my shed
