Quite hungry, apparently.
That stake needs to go.
I would remove the caterpillars; hard to tell the overall tree health based on these pictures alone but what is there looks fine.
Some kind of moth, maybe Dantana moth. Pick em off and throw em in the woods. Tree will survive, might flush new leaves this year still, but prolly not. Should flush out 100% next spring.
