Hi, I just joined this thread because I am looking for some advice on my lovely Japanese maple I have in my front yard! I’m unsure of its age, it was planted by the owners before my family (we’ve owned this home since 2012) but I do know it was already established enough for shaping and trims at the point of previous family members living here back in the 20teens. I’ve noticed the last two years it’s had a rough time blooming despite us giving it a trim. It’s gotten much taller though, we can’t even reach the top with the ladder we have anymore. The leaves aren’t as vibrant in color as they once were, and the base of the tree doesn’t look as healthy as it once did. Im just hoping for some sort of point in the right direction of what we could do to help the tree back to its fullest potential. If additional info or pictures are needed I’ll be happy to add them! Thanks so much for reading! ☺️

No advice for you unfortunately, but congrats on your gorgeous tree!

Not seeing much for signs that it’s having a tough time, but some general guidelines for tree health is to remove any obstructions surrounding the trunk, exposing the tops of the roots where they exit the trunk and putting 1-4 inches of mulch around the base in place of grass. Another thing that applies to Japanese Maples specifically is they actually really don’t like direct sunlight, they do much better being underneath the shade of a larger tree and can cook to death in intense direct heat. (Although an older tree like this is more resilient) If another tree was cut down previously nearby that might be affecting it.

Otherwise just give it time, as I said they prefer shade so extensive fussing and trimming can cause issues, might just need some space
