Hi all, long time lurker first time poster, but last week my boyfriend and I noticed this tree in our apartment complex had begun shedding quite a bit of bark and it seems like a split has started to form in the main trunk so it’s feeling like an issue of not if, but when. Not an arborist, but initially I thought that maybe a minor lightning strike had caused it, but now I think it’s more likely it’s probably a combo of disease and high winds.

So I should report this yeah? 😶‍🌫️

I’m located in Maryland and this might be a hickory, unsure tho!

Yeah. It was struck by lightning and likely won’t recover from that much damage

Definitely! That looks like an ash tree that has succumb to emerald ash borer. Regardless, it is done for and only a matter of time (not much) before it  creates a hazard. Now that it is shedding bark, it will be completely dead very soon. This makes it likely to drop limbs or even split or come down completely with or without a wind event.
