So we have been gradually removing dirt to expose the root flare of this yellowwood tree. The deeper we go the worse it looks. Primary roots doubling back on themselves and over each other… On one side it looks like the root may just tuck under the stem! We can tell which of the small roots have got to go, but the big ones…? Be honest, can this be saved?
Sorry about the mud making it hard to see. We thought we could wash some loose dirt away to see the roots better but it didn't settle quickly enough.

Dig up the mud (without damaging the roots and keeping the tree alive) and fill that newly made hole with new dry crumpled dirt, mixed with a LOT of wood chips. Fill that hole till you create a mound of dirt and wood chips that surpasses the trees base, but only by a little (as in half a foot).
I seriously suggest planting mushrooms as the base of the tree to help it expand its roost even further in the ground.
EDIT: maybe, MAYBE, add some rocks to that hole you might be filling.
