I think it’s a Norway Maple tree, and we loved it so much. During the early summer months it hosted thousands of fireflies and gave our backyard a lot of shade. Now I’m scared that it is going to fall towards the backyard neighbors guest house.
We came home one day to find it in this shape without being told by the landlord next door he was as even considering it.
Our property marker is on the backside of the tree, and the tree service company took down my chicken wire fence and threw it in the back neighbors yard to do this. They drove all throughout our property and shot the tree trimmings at the side of our house, peppering our yard, side, and roof with two inch long wood chips.
I’m at a loss, I’m pretty upset about it, and don’t know what I should do.
I have reached out to a certified arborist for a value but they haven’t got back to me yet. Do I value the total tree or just the damaged part? From what I’ve read online, I’ve found the breast height circumference is 116 inches. But I have no clue on what to do with that information.
Any insight or guidance would be massively appreciated, I don’t like my backyard anymore.

Did you make a police report?
Yeah, I’m no lawyer or arborist but that looks like a lawsuit to me
FFS the size of that wound 🙁

Time to lawyer up.
sue their asses off
Wtf did they only trim *your* side of it too?
This is pretty messed up. Think should warrant a fence after this and some cameras pointed over there
This is weird, like they got the directions backwards or something. Why’d they only trim your side? I’d be so upset.
Trim? They absolutely butchered your tree
If Reddit has taught me anything you don’t cut random trees. Lawyer up and sue the absolute shit out of the neighbor and tree company, no sympathy.
What: The FUCK. This is actually sickening. That’s not “limbing up” — which would *also* require permission! — that’s half the fucking trunk. What makes people do this?? Genuinely OP if you talk to them and get a reason, I need to know. Also is there lead in their water?? Carbon Monoxide poisoning? It just makes no sense.
Don’t forget to fill the backyard with the ugliest decor corner to corner to ruin the view they created

I can’t figure out what this means. Landlord for who? You? The neighbor? The landlord next door was considering what?
How sure are you the neighbor hired them? Did they admit do it?
Oh my god. And the gall to trespass and remove a fence. I’m having trouble imagining even the most crooked or incompetent company/dudes wanting anything to do with this _if_ they knew it wasn’t the other person’s tree. I’m fully expecting a follow-up post saying the landlord claimed they owned your property and the dudes were idiots and took them at their word.
What a (formerly) beautiful tree.
I’d be livid. Inconsolably angry.
File charges immediately. Are you 100 percent sure where the property boundaries are at?
Wow. I am devastated for you. It’s a shit situation all around. And obviously you should DEFINITELY sue. But that doesn’t bring the tree back. So sad for you. You obviously loved it considering the pics you took of it during all its stages in the year.
That’s $100k+ for the tree and maybe $20k for a helicopter delivery and work? Wouldn’t want be the guy responsible.
What a shame. Ruined a majestic tree. We cannot put a price tag on the damages done.
This is actually of significant value to your homes equity as well. You should be suing him – he might be apologizing now, but that’s just because now he is scared of consequences. He likely thought no big deal it’s just a tree they wont care. A tree of this size, he shouldve and likely was there talking to the tree company’s foreman.
I have a buddy who leads a tree trimming crew and those guys ONLY do what they are told by the hiring party so they do not get in trouble. The landlord OKAY’d this – you should sue him.
That tree is also much more prone to falling over now in a storm/ice storm because of what they did to it.
Go after the homeowner and the company. wtf
Oh man… this is one thing that would instantly transform me into an unreasonable American
I have had the exact thing happen to me. My property backs up to some apartments. Twice they’ve cut my trees down to the top of the fence line. My property line actually goes beyond the fence by a few feet into the easement also. Good luck!
U get a lawyer and sue their ass, neighbors, and company that did it, thats what you do. Dont talk to them, dont say shit, just get a lawyer.
This is probably the worst violation I’ve seen posted here.
You cannot overreact to this kind of attack on your home and trees, your neighbor is deranged and does not respect fences, property lines, or anything.
I only pray that your state allows at minimum triple damages to be awarded for tree destruction and that your lawyer adds on every other possible expense you’ve suffered from this (new fence, fix the roof, etc). I hope that the price tag adds up high enough that your neighbor is forced to sell their home and leave.
I mean that tree provided some real privacy which is now gone. Even putting up a fence can only do so much. Considering the landscaping and trees also play into your property appeal and perceived value of the house when buying it, that was all taken away as well. All of that should be compensated in addition to the cost of putting up a new fence for privacy now.
