Hello – I have a very large Maple in my front yard. I believe it is an Autumn Blaze. The size is such that I can maybe wrap my arms half-way around it.

I have this little root knot sticking up in the grass 8-10 feet away from the trunk. I hit it with the lawnmower last fall when I cut the grass shorter at the end of the year. The lawnmower barely clears it during summer cutting.

Can I shave the top inch or so off of this knot? I'm not wanting to cut the whole root or anything.

You shouldn’t harm the roots that have surfaced. One suggestion would be to carefully remove a bit of topsoil from around the tree and make a mulch ring around it. That would protect the roots and look appealing.

I’m not an arborist, so for all I know it’s perfectly safe to cut that, but if it was my yard I would just gradually build up the ground level in the area around it by topdressing over the course of a year or two.
