Wife and I are looking buy this house, but this tree looks dead and will likely need to be taken down. Possibly too much mulch that killed it?

No the mulch is good. Likely another reason.

Little bit of mulch ain’t gonna kill that thing.

You really need a picture at the top my guy.

It might be worth adding the cost to remove the tree as a reduction of the contract price, or at least maybe the sellers can chip in a little.

Likely the owners are going to have to negotiate removal of this tree into the transaction no matter who they sell it to. People don’t want to buy a house with a huge dead tree that is likely a few grand to remove. And no, the mulch didn’t do that

Mulch? What did you read that makes you think mulch kills trees 😄 Reddit is not the place to learn about trees. Tree death is a spiraling process. One predisposing factor like Soil compaction leads to an Inciting factor like drought which leads to contributing factors like boring insects which inevitably leads to death. It’s always more than a single factor.

Depending species… log may be spalted & valuable to custom furniture makers….

not an arborist but that tree is as dead as it gets. for a tree this size depending on where you live it could be anywhere between 3000-4000 to remove it

Was all that bark removed, or did it fall off as a result of death/illness?

I don’t know much about trees, but removing the bark all the way around is a pretty sure way to kill one, no?

That thing been dead for a few years. Could have gotten hit by lightning to be honest.

Holy cow, what a dangerous situation. I wouldn’t want to close until that tree is on the ground.

Wow that’s sad. What a beautiful tree it must have been.

    So, hypothetical.

What would happen if you lit this thing on fire? Water goes down so top is going to be drier… What if you light it near the top? Could it burn down?

You have no idea what that tree has done. It got what it deserved and I’ll leave it at that.

If you’ve already locked into the house in escrow or something – just negotiate an additional discount.  It doesn’t have to lower the price of the house make them just pay you back x at the sale.  I’d go for prob like 10-12k minimum for that thing – but it won’t reduce sales amount and seller and buying agents should be happy as their commission isn’t affected

I agree with people saying it’s dangerous, but tbh, if you have any hand in removal, maybe consider leaving parts of it standing as a sort of “snag” tree? If y’all are fans of wildlife/nature, that’s a good way to get some neat birds and other critters.

Plus, if y’all wanted to hang bird feeders or anything like that, you wouldn’t have to worry about harming a living tree, lol!

Speaking as someone who recently purchased our house with a big dead tree in the backyard, thinking we would just call our tree guy and take care of it… negotiate its removal BEFORE you buy! Save yourself the money, stress and headache.

Blasphemy, never too much mulch or landscaping lights .lol

  19. MaxRoofer

Do you just want the bottom
Half removed? Or do you want all of it?

  20. Joey_Hicks1120

I would ask the homeowner to give an allowance to have it removed.

  21. DEDang1234

What made you think mulch killed such a massive tree?

  22. Tree_killer_76

The Ohio State stone is what killed that tree lol.

  23. Removal cost will be in the 7 – 10 thousand range.
