I have a 5 ish year old bur oak sapling planted and my wife backed over it a few months back. I made a “this probably isn’t going to work” attempt to graft the trunk back together and it didn’t work. However, 4 off shoots have sprouted around the break and have all grown this far in just a few months. How should I trim this to have it grow best? I know I need to wait until winter to keep oak blight at bay, but which leader should I focus on? Or just leave it to be a big multi-trunk monster?

I am not the one to give advice on this, but good luck OP. Bur Oak is my favorite tree!

Honestly, this tree is so small I’d wait a couple years to prune it – let it get as much growth and photosynthesis as possible – probably depleted a lot of its reserves after getting decapitated. Maybe put a small fence around it – and mulch! – so she doesn’t back over it again.
