When we sold our last house, our giant silver maple was dropping seeds so we took a couple with us. One we planted because at the time it looked straighter and the leaves turn orange in the fall and are gorgeous. The other stayed in a pot (sorry I know) because there isn’t room for another tree in the yard and we wanted a backup before finding the tree a new home.

Well like the first winter our planted tree got bit off by a deer, and it started growing around the bit off part so we figured it would be fine. But it’s been like four years since we planted the tree, and it’s tiny. Our potted sibling tree, is apparently thriving (hopefully the roots are still ok, idk but it’s huge).

So my husband thought the planted tree must’ve been growing deep roots instead of growing up, but it’s so much smaller than its sibling now that I’m worried we planted the wrong tree and should replace it with the potted one. Thoughts? I don’t want to keep the other tree in a pot any longer so we either need to switch them or find it a new home.

TLDR: I’m worried we planted the wrong tree, should we switch them?

That seedling in the ground has stiff competition from the lawn grass and weeds.

Remove the competition, mulch, and put up a temporary fence to exclude deer. It is tall enough to survive rabbits and other small herbivores.
