A large branch fell off a sycamore tree in my front yard. I noticed the inside of the branch and the bark near the break are black. Should I be concerned for the tree's overall health?

  1. Well, one thing’s for sure. That branch is _dead_.

As for the tree? Dunno, be nice to see some pictures of it 😉

Well I think we can all say that tree is no longer attached to that branch

It depends how much dead wood it’s holding…

It is normal to have a fair a few chunks of varying sizes depending on the age of the tree.

Dead wood gets removed over streets and paths in city’s annually, because it breaks off easily and can kill people , it all depends on the volume of dead in the crown.

It’s definitely rotted out. Could be an indicator of overall health of the tree. We had a branch fall on our roof this winter due to it rotting from the inside. Had multiple arborists come and assess it. Most said the tree was in decline (not just based off the rot but other factors as well). We had it removed as it was a safety concern. I planted a new tree a few feet away and had to chop away roots from the old tree and sure enough the roots had signs of major rot happening as well. Have a reputable arborist (or 3) come and look at it.

  5. A sycamore without rotted or dead branches would be more shocking than the opposite. I wouldn’t say it’s an indicator of overall tree health at all. Sycamores are very well known for dropping branches. If there are a dozen dead or dying branches, then I would be concerned, but if there are just one or two here and there, I would consider it pretty normal.

This could be Massaria, the fungus Macrodiplodiopsis desmazieri, which is a growing problem in sycamores. It seems hot summers have a positive impact on the fungus spreading and it is not clear if trimming helps or does the opposite. Some suggest that trimming leads to more heat exposure (direkt sunlight) and therefore makes the fungus grow faster.

First time you have noticed a dead branch falling from your Sycamore?

OP… when you go to the Dr. Office, do you just bring your wrist with you and leave the rest at home?

I have a 200 year old sycamore and it drops branches all the time from very high up. What’s the overall health of the trunk, base, and stalk?

A picture of the actual tree would be far more informative than pictures of the branch that fell.

Sycamores shed dead branches all the time by themselves… At least those we have here in Greece do… It’s a good health indicator if anything

Just happened here, too.  A branch about 10’ long fell on the sidewalk and more fell in our front yard.  All 6-8” in diameter.  It’s the third time this year that big branches have dropped.   I hope the city responds soon and checks it out.
