18:56 Thrifting, touring the botanical park, more thrifting adventures of the day before, chocolates, and coffee!

[Music] okay guys so we are at this Botanical center they are [Music] today I want to give you a quick tour of the back Garden at the end of May I want to show you what is blooming uh in garden zone 5 here in Illinois also would like to show you the front earns I’ve got those planted up see how I did those differently every year I’d like I change them up give you a quick peek of the progress of the raised cut flower garden and also we need to go thrifting today I wouldn’t mind stopping at a Botanical Garden to um I went to it last year and I took you to it but it was a little bit later in the season so I missed some of the flowers and I want to see what they’re they look like now since it’s earlier in the season they may be blooming better we’ll check that out we’re getting ready for a storm here uh it’s going to be raining before long so we’re going to try to get this in before all the rain starts here in the back Garden I did um I do have the bigger mic today I did shoot this yesterday with my clip on mic and I had no sound so I don’t know what it is I messed with it still didn’t work so we switched to the bigger mic but you should be able to hear me fine so let’s get going and check out the beautiful Back Garden okay some of the things I want to point out now are look at the beautiful Planters now those have The Proven Winners um super Tunas in them in the window boxes in the planners and they give a huge pop of color now if you remember just a couple weeks ago I planted those up and I even uh pointed out in that video how um sad they kind of look when you first plant them up because they’re so tiny when you put them in but it takes no time for them to fill out and grow huge but if you’re wanting beautiful window boxes and containers with your um patunas and your other annuals make sure that you’re giving them lots of food because that’s what’s going to help them so now how is this area looking this area was all grass last year this was a new flower bed that we created last year and I’m going to go ahead and start walking around so I can show you close-ups here in the middle we have a Home Depot rose that I purchased last season and uh this was called sentous and I think it was by May bouquet but look how pretty those flowers are very nice so then in the background we’ve got some Salvia I used lots of of salvia in my garden because I do have wild rabbits and they do not like the Salvia and I do like the purple mixed in with the pinks and the whites of the Roses we do have some Peach uh Fox Glove coming in right now the Lamb’s Ear is just looking gorgeous look at that bumblebee do you see him there oh he is huge can I get him very well there we go look at him so he is liking that Lamb’s Ear and it just started to bloom now this was like a little quart siiz pot last year when I planted it and look how big it’s got we’ve got a cream uh brulee uh poin tillia I think I’m saying that correctly right there that looks really pretty It Started blooming early and I like that because it gave color before anything else up front I have three setting pretty roses that I just showed you in the Home Depot video now I am struggling a little bit with powdery milu on this so I did give it a spritz last night and like I mentioned I have three of them so I have another one here and it does not have that and then my third one is right down here and it doesn’t have powdery do so I don’t know what’s going on with that first one but we’ll just give it a treatment and see if we can stop that but you can see beautiful roses they’re very very fragrant I do like them in Cut bouquet I uh did show you this week in the community post I came out and cut some of the Roses cuz they just started blooming this week and uh did a little bouquet so if you’re not part of our group you’re going to want to subscribe because I post in the community community post throughout the week of like updates and things I’m doing out in the garden or how things are blooming so hit that subscribe and join our community we would love to have there’s some new stuff I just planted that little purple Proven Winners geranium I just planted a couple weeks ago and I thought that would be really pretty in front of that pink rose so that’s a hearty geranium and it is a prenal so I do think those little purple flowers are super sweet and will look pretty against the pink rose and then we have a Veronica up here uh back here is a High Country Rose from last year last year I bought five or six High Country roses online and this is one of them and this is bolero and it’s got pretty white roses on it so it’s its second season and you can see my gorgeous thrifted urn that my friend found at a tag sale for me and text me and said hey I I know you like ears I found this do you want it and I’m like do you need to even ask of course I want it and I had put out in the community post to you guys last year here should I leave it this color should I spray paint it black should I spray paint it white and O the overall response was just leave it so that’s what I did and then I topped it with a beautiful uh wire clo that I had picked up at the Morris French market that I just took you on last week a few years ago so I think that makes a really pretty combination with that pink petunia cascading out over it and the thrifted statue of the lady there in the background this is another High Country Rose from last season this is Lillian Austin which is a David Austin rose look how beautiful that is so this is her second year in the garden now these I planted last fall and these are aliums and they were already spent they’re already done oh probably last week so you know what I did I pulled out my can of spray paint spray painted them lavender and look how nice they look so we’ll see how well they do in the garden but I do like that pop of color planted the new Proven Winners um flocks that I had got with you just a couple weeks ago the little chair the ice cream parlor chair I thrifted a couple weeks ago it was navy blue I spray painted it white and just set it back there for now I may move it around later but it matches is my little bistro set so I just thought that was a cute tie in if I wanted to I could put a a pot of flowers on it that would be pretty now this is a real nice salv I like this it’s doing really well I think it’s called new dimension and it is a proven winner Salvia but you can see that it’s multicolored so it has dark purple it has white and it has lavender on it the bees of course love it um so if you’re looking for a Salvia I think this is a real nice shape and also a real pretty um color versus just having the regular purple like in the back I think that’s April night or may night back there that’s a bubblegum knockout look how gorgeous that is like I’ve told you before Knockouts you can’t go wrong the only thing with a knockout rose though is you just don’t get the fragrance but you sure get the flower power and this will be a red knockout rose here a double and then right here here this is all the D I call it the David Austin corner so these were David Austin Roses that were bare root two of them and then one of them I bought as a plant and this is their this will be their third season so our first one here is des nimona look how gorgeous she is this is Olivia now Olivia look how she is a profuse Bloomer she just has all kinds of pretty light pink blooms all over looks really pretty with that Salvia that purple and then of course I had a few of those aliums and I went ahead and gave them a quick spray too since they were faded and this is Bosco Bell now Bosco Bell is a deeper pink rose I have one down in here that’s bloomed you can see and then of course there’s buds all over her so she’s going to look fabulous too now what did I do with the ears this year on each side of the bench uh I PL those up with yellow finch super Tunas and that’s new I think for Proven Winners this year and it’s performing really well and it is a real pretty yellow with that white on it I do like it I’m not much of a yellow person but I do like that and I put that with that superbena Violet ice and then we have a boldly pink geranium in the middle we have some sweet alysum in the back and some dichondra Falls up front so as that f s in keeping in mind this has only been planted up a couple weeks it is going to be beautiful and we have the same thing on the other side okay I’m standing on top of my bench right now because I want to give you a bird’s eyee view of what this looks like behind the bench so we have some pretty bubblegum knockout roses we have Salvia that white rose is Winchester Cathedral it’s a David Austin Rose and there’s the second n and look at all that beautiful Fox Glove I am loving the Fox Glove I’m so glad that I planted that from seed and then back in the back is a red knockout rose um I did have some really pretty pink Coline but it is about done I’m seeing there’s not much left on that because that’s more of a spring plant and then in the back on the fence we have Jac lamania Claus growing so that’s going to be blooming here about mid June and it will have purple flowers all over it and then next to that right behind the arbor VY we have Autumn claas so later probably July August time that gets little white flowers all over it so this little corner here is looking really pretty there’s that little oblisk that I picked up at the French market last weekend I do like it there and it’s protecting a little plant Little Seedling plant and it looks really nice I think with the ears and the bench and as you can see I did plant up the Wicker Basket my DIY wicker basket that I had spring bulbs in that I showed you a video on uh probably a month or two ago I put a mini Vista uh pink and white stripe patun in it some sweet alysum and in the back behind is a row of geraniums that I grew from seed over the winter boy did I like growing geranium from seed and I think I’ll do that again next year so what do we have under the Jane Magnolia we have some beautiful ladies’s Manel there um a couple of hydrangeas now I did have the double pink impatience in the ground I showed you last month in the April video and um two of the three double impatients I put in the ground the raccoons dug up so instead I took this concrete pot that the same the urn that my friend had found at the tag sale this concrete pot was at the tag sale too and back here we can see the Fox Glove the hybrid t- roses Paris is starting to open up with that peachy uh Orange it’s very fragrant has beautiful blooms will be really nice in arrangements and back between the two hybrid te’s the other one is Princess Charlene which is more of a apricot color is bees it was I think bees knees or something like that Delphinium so it’s a white Delphinium and then it has a black center so that looks really pretty and then of course the lion Fountain which I don’t use as a fountain I use it just as a fence Decor I had picked up at the Morris French Market a few years ago and just really like having that with the roses and the Delphinium and in this area we have a easy eleg champagne wishes rose that I purchased from Lowe’s that has really pretty white flowers on it um really nice and cut flower arrangements it does have multiple flowers on one stem as you can see so makes a good cluster flower in an arrangement we have some Delphinium in the back that’s getting ready to open we have some ivy on the trellis gorgeous gorgeous Fox Glove right there in full bloom some Salvia now that’s an Rose it’s a climber back there we did have a storm the other night and the Obelisk blew over so I did move it and I’ll have to restructure it back and then we have a white knockout rose next to it which is a single that’s right now in its full bloom and looking beautiful and here this was all planted new last year and actually this bed was pulled out away from the house it was very close to the house more like Foundation planning so it was only a couple feet away from the house and we expanded it and then I added all of that most of that stuff new so the Salvia the hot pink bubblegum Rose The Veronicas there’s three Bobo hydrangeas we’ve got a pretty pot of flowers there with the white out verbina and the spear that I picked up at the French market last year and then there’s Jack lamia Jac lamania Claus climbing behind it that are up against the deck so that’ll be really pretty once they fill in and start blooming in a couple weeks so now as we pan around the boxwood are doing fine on the around the fountain they’re filling in nicely um some of these are brand new from last year little plants as you can see some of them are from previous now originally I had planted this all up with boxwood probably two seasons ago and a lot of them died and so I replanted last year so that’s why we have two different sizes but they are filling in nicely and I am not shaping them yet I’m just going to let them continue to grow and see how they do before I start uh shaping them up it’s looking really pretty here at the end of May as we’re starting to go into June in another week can’t wait to see all the Roses In Bloom I will show you this little corner real quick uh I did purchase this two-piece earn set from Home Depot last year online and I really like that planted up that is a fiberglass set so it’s lighter weight and then I did uh three different pots of the different super Tunas mimicking each other and I think those will be really pretty as they fill in there with the hostas I created a little seating uh area here next to our grill for us to set out on and it’s just been really nice out here so far this season so let’s take a walk up front and check out the front earns okay so if you recall on the front ears I had planted them up with spring flowers and I had the orange violas and the pansies the the white sweet alysum well I wasn’t ready to get rid of them they look so nice in there and they were doing so well now eventually probably by July the pansies and the violas will fade out here uh in zone 5 but I did add the red super Tunas and the mini white super Tunas with the dark potato potato vine so I did those for my summer flowers so I added those in and they looked couple weeks ago really good because you know like I mentioned they’re really small when you first put them in so having those spring flowers in there just really added to and made full and now you can see and especially with our um Chicago style brick on our house I really am liking the Reds and the oranges and the whites together I think it looks really nice with that brick and um they filled in beautifully they’re looking gorgeous very very full so very happy with those and um I am liking the spring flowers and with the summer flowers I think it looks good good so we’ll see how they continue to go okay and I did want to give you a quick peek update on the raised flower garden so we still have quite a bit of work to do here but we did get the beds filled with soil the bigger beds and I do have plants in them that I had in PL in pots and things that I’ve picked up that I’ve added now so we’ll see as the season goes on um again this is a continual project still working on it um but so far I am liking the look so we’ll and again it’s an experiment and it’ll change next year I’ll learn this year what I like in there what I don’t like and switch it all out because that’s the thing about gardening we’re always changing things up and trying new things and experimenting so um more to come on this as it progresses throughout the season well I hope you enjoyed the back Garden Tour and seen the front ears and the progress we’ve made on the cut flower garden now let’s go thrifting and that will be from yesterday because like I mentioned this is take two on this video and I’m also going to take you to the Botanical Gardens and show you around there give you a quick chure of the gardens and what’s In Bloom so let’s get going okay we just stopped at uh thrift shop and I picked up a few things and I want to show you what I found and then I’m going to take you on a walk and I’ll tell you more about that in a minute so at the thrift shop I’m always looking for garden decor stuff I can use out in the garden or in the house that is used for the Garden or garden house now I am on the lookout for cotton scarves cotton scarves were on Trend a few years ago now they’re out of trend so you can pick them up pretty cheap so I found some beautiful cotton scarfs to use as Bistro tablecloths for a a couple dollars we have this one that’s a darker color and has some more Bolder prints and then I also found this pretty light pink and mint green green one that I think will look really nice out on the bistro table for a couple dollars so I got those now are you looking for wire closes for your garden to protect your little plants and when you look at cloches they are expensive when you go to buy them new well think out of the box when you’re out thrifting and look for all kinds of different wire baskets different wire shapes and could you repurpose those to use as a wire clo to protect your tender little plants so let me show you what I found this was on Trend a few years ago and it is the candle holder wire cage it kind of looks like a little bird cage I thought it was really cute so what you do is you cut cut the bottom off and you’re going to have an open bottom that easily slides down over plants and is just a very cute decoration to have out in the garden and I only paid $4 for this so I was thrilled about that so A New Garden clo now where are we at we are at a Botanical center that I took you to last season and when I went um um it was a little bit I think later in the season and the Roses had already a lot of them had already bloomed well we’re here today at the end of May and I am seeing lots of Flowers In Bloom so let’s go take a look okay guys so we are at this Botanical center they are the maintenance People are cleaning and weed whacking and stuff so it’s a little bit noisy but let’s take a walk around and see the beautiful colors [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] okay guys we are at the resale store let’s go inside and see if we find any furniture or chairs or anything that’ll work out in the garden house oh look at that cute little table it’s a tiny tiny little end table but it’s super cute $28 with a glass top okay they have they’ve got lots of stuff today so all their tables and chairs are an extra 25% off so that cute little intable I just seen uh would have been 25% off too here’s chairs up here on first look so far I’m not really seeing anything that’ll work but I’m GNA keep looking lots of dining tables this is a pretty end table needs to be refinished that’s really pretty for $40 and it would be 25% off also and I do look at Art when I come here too just to see if they ever have anything that would be of interest well they got a smaller chandelier this time it’s $70 but it almost looks just like the one that I bought but a smaller version well I see lots of furniture guys but nothing that has spoken to me there is a lot of furniture and it is really busy in here it doesn’t look like it right now but there is a lot of people the parking lot was really full and I think it’s because of the 25% off sale I don’t know how often they run that but um so lots of furniture but nothing that I see that I’m looking for I’m going to go over to the Garden area now they have a little tiny area that they put garden stuff in and see if they have anything over there well they had lots of stuff and it was very busy in there with the sale but I just really didn’t see anything that uh like I mentioned that spoke to me I went over to the Garden area and they didn’t have hardly anything they normally don’t have much garden stuff um and it’s like one of those places when you Thrift at it’s hit and miss sometimes you find stuff and sometimes you don’t I did like that little chandelier it did look almost I think it looked identical to the one that I bought that it was the small version um but I just right now can’t think of any place that I would use it so that being the case I passed on it and somebody else is going to have a really good find that they find and be thrilled about so I think this we’re at Goodwill guys and I think this will be really pretty in the fall on the VRA table so it has a price tag on it it was for Ma’s for $20 and we’re at Goodwill and it’s a bck .99 so I think we’ll be getting that this is a cute little foot stool it needs to be recovered and then I’d probably spray paint these uh 3.99 though okay so I’m thinking plant stand this would be a good plant stand again I would spray paint that top a different color I like the wood base but I don’t like the blue top but it’s a real nice nice and heavy for $4.99 and then I just purchased one of these new similar a poof for outside $15.99 that’s a pretty good buy I paid more than that new for it of course I also like this picture I like to take pictures and turn them into flower holders so for fall or later this season and use that to put sunflowers in that would be really pretty and it’s $4.99 and that’s a pretty heavy terracotta rectangular like window box $10.99 uh the only thing I don’t like about these is that is super heavy it is pretty deep but you would be watering that quite a bit unless you hook that up to some drip okay guys so um that was Goodwill and I showed you a lot of stuff and I do try to show you different things try to give you guys ideas too and show you the kinds of things I see when I’m out thrifting now next to Goodwill is a new chocolate shop so we are going to go check out the chocolate shop so let’s go check that out and then we’re going to hit another thrift store [Music] [Laughter] [Music] so that is called iconic coffee and energy and it was funny because I told her I just wanted a black coffee plane and she’s like are you sure like you don’t want anything in it and I’m like nope so people aren’t used to when you want just a black coffee uh so we’ve got my chocolates now we’ve got the coffee we’re heading to the next thrift store uh so let’s go see what we can find okay so here is my little box of truffles that I got at ultimate chocolate I did dark chocolate plain dark chocolate mint and dark chocolate raspberry so the Truffle was delicious I ended up eating the chocolate dark chocolate raspberry truffle and the coffee is good too so are we ready to shop some more let me have some more coffee to fortify myself before we hit another thrift store um so far today no chairs not finding any chairs the chandelier guys though I’m really I’m still pausing about I’ve went through every room in my house though uh mentally and there’s just nowhere to put it so I need to pass on it but boy oh boy it was calling my name well that’s really really hot so let’s go ahead and go in and Shop okay so I love to even shop their Windows cuz they put tons of stuff in their Windows here at the Discovery shop so let’s head inside this is pretty and then it has little little ones to go with it see it’s a set $16 for the set and here’s some nice baskets 24 and this one is 34 and this one’s 35 I would say that those are probably all longer burger baskets like I said I like to take those pictures and turn them into fresh flower holders if you ever and teapots teapots are really pretty fresh flower holders this one has the whole set for $15 it says lots of gorgeous scarfs think of all the different color [Music] combinations that I could do out on the vistro with all these pretty colors the peaches and the pinks and the greens but these are silky and I don’t think they would work as well as something like this that’s more of that light cottony fabric that’s really pretty too have a great week guys and I will see you in the next video [Music]

  1. New to your channel your gardens is beautiful thank you for the tour and info on we’re you purchase things I’m on the hunt for a rabbit statue like the one by your tree I want one for my dogwood it would be so pretty

  2. Love your beautiful garden. I heard you talk about your autumn clematis( it grows well for me zone4), what was the purple blooming clematis next to it on the back fence? I heard jacklamania( but I may have heard wrong, is it jackmanii?) it looks different and Hardy. Maybe I could grow it here.

  3. I love fox glove and planted it twice when I lived in Birmingham, AL but had no success. I have now moved 60 miles further southwest and planted a small flower garden and everything has grown so beautifully I would love to try fox glove again but don't want to lose another one. This location is full sun next to my house and very hot in mid to late summer. Do you have any suggestions?

  4. I LOVE Love love your gardens, they are stunning! I love the use of your urns, your yard is wonderful!
I went all out this year as much as my budget would allow because this is our 10th year in our home! I went mostly pink for spring with supertunias, a fuchsia, vincas, coleus, geraniums (I have to move from window boxes, they are getting too much water I learned)
    Excellent video
I love your wire basket as cloches idea. I’ve seen those candle birdhouses in Goodwill a couple of times! So fun!

  5. Enjoy your garden thrifting and seeing your garden too! Always good to see what other people grow in our state successfully as well.

  6. Hey Michelle, I see you were in my neck of the woods. The botanical garden is my grandson's favorite place to be. I heard you say you are in IL. We should totally go to some other places that I know about. That Habitat ReStore is always busy because their hours are so limited.

  7. Excellent channel So glad I came across your garden. I love garden art or ornaments you have the first Channell with plenty of videos showing them and your DIY tips and skills. The garden is beautiful . I would love to have so many thrift shops, nurseries and garden centers 😊 I’m in zone 6 SE Michigan
