We've been lucky to have this big old silver maple cast shade on basically our entire house for many years, standing strong through many storms during our time here, and certainly decades before we were around, but unfortunately it needs to come down. A large limb fell unexpectedly during a calm morning, but thankfully landed perfectly between the two houses in the picture. There was a bit of rot and decay previously not seen during prunings and the confidence that it will not break further isnt there.

It will be greatly missed.

Shame on you 😆 that tree has been around longer than you and your last 2 generations most likely. Who are you to decide that it’s time is up? You’d be better off hiring a quality arborist to prune/care for that tree with hazard mitigation in mind. Your yard will never be the same, or as beautiful.

  2. It is a gorgeous tree, but silver maples are not a good bet. Once they start failing, they really need to be removed. We had a couple large ones that were about 80 years old that both had to come down 2 years ago. Lucky for us, one was on the easement so the city took care of it. They were both looking fine on the outside but started dropping large branches showing how rotted they were inside. It’s sad to see them go, but necessary.

Please consider a second opinion, if it needs to come down then so be it but please make sure before cutting it down. I hope the decay is not as bad as expected 😭

Exactly this. It’s no surprise to me, at that size and age to be rotting and more of a hazard than I’d take.

I have a big Sliver in my backyard. Limb fell out of it in 2010. I said I was going to take it down but my Dad said, just give it a year, see how it looks. Its been 15 years now and the tree still looks the same.

Sad, I bet many children have played in the tree.

Look into “summer limb drop” or “sudden limb drop”. Give it a chance. You will regret taking it down if you don’t speak to 2-3 arborist. Also prob lose some home value

  8. Good bye tree. Thank you for your years of shade and beauty.

A little too late now, but this is one reason why the recommendation now is to plant a new tree when trees start getting old and big like this, so when the old one comes down, you have a new one already partly grown.

But you know what they say about trees, the best time to plant one was twenty years ago. The next best time is today. Hope you are able to find a better tree(s) species for your next one(s).

I can empathize with you. We just lost a mulberry that was about the size of your tree. My husband’s grandfather planted it when my mother-in-law was born. He passed away suddenly when she was 12 years old. The tree was 75 years old and still healthy and growing strong. It shaded their home and most of their 1/2 acre of property. Due to recent huge amount of rains we’ve had, the saturated ground couldn’t hold it any longer. I cried for a couple of days when the guys came to cut it down.

Please have it milled and make something or have something made to pass down. Expect higher utility bills.
