Should I ask the arborist who pruned our tree to clean up some of these cuts?
We just had an arborist company prune our large tree for $900, but to my untrained eye, some of these cuts look like they could be cleaner and a bit closer to the trunk. What do y’all think?
I think, for $900 dollars, you don’t really have room to complain.

Hey I’m sure that was a really good price to prune the tree but Jesus dude.
There’s one like, semi-acceptable cut in the one pic where it’s flat and closer to the stem but literally everything else is horrible.
This is someone who only prunes from the stem and removes whole branches instead of from the outside-in where you reduce from the tips back. He must’ve been holding on to that stem for dear life and afraid to go out on the limbs either due to negligence or they were new to tree care.
These ripped down the cut side because the branch was WAY too heavy for the cut and he just sliced straight through without properly make a 3-step cut where you release the weight and THEN make the final cut to seal over.
Honestly I wouldn’t call them back for anything. I’d let someone who’s actually doing this professionally make some suggestions instead. It will be more money but honestly forget that other person.

that is not good work. if the company advertises ISA certified arborists or if your point of contact is a certified arborist 100% call them back out to clean up the work.
if no one is certified then unfortunately i don’t think calling them back out is a good call. you’re just letting unskilled trimmers who don’t know or don’t care cut more of your trees. best to lick your wounds and try again next year (after the tree has recovered) with certified professionals

Absolutely. You don’t want to cut too close to the feeder branch though as that can affect the health of the tree, but I don’t like their work.

First, I would have the arborist come back out and explain to you why they cut the limbs the way they did. There maybe a good reason for what they did, and maybe not. If the arborist does come back out, if they can not provide a reasonable answer, then I would make sure they clean up their sloppy work before leaving my residence.

They aren’t an arb. LOL

Hire a real arborist to fix these mistakes.
TheTreeGuyNW
OMG..NO!! GET A NEW TRIMMER!! Whoever did this, should never be allowed to touch a tree!!

Typically an arborist cuts a sloppy cut, than a second clean cut (2-12”)at the right angle or length. Not hard if you’re already up there!
That works definitely not from an arborist.

This is why I watch any new arborist or tree trimmer like a hawk eying a vole until I trust their knowledge and ability. First cut like that they would be gone.

An Arborist did not prune this tree, some jackass pruned this tree. I’m really sorry they did this. I hope they were cheap at least.
Shmiggams22
And you confirmed these claims using the ISA registry? Im baffled if any of that is true!
Iwanttobeagnome
An arborist did not make those cuts. And if they did they should lose their license

It is hard to believe that a board certified master arborist would knowingly avoid the three cut method and make all these horrible peelers. You should check the ISA website and see if they are actually credentialed. Either way this most definitely needs to be cleaned up, unfortunately there is no way to fix the peeling that extends beyond the branch attachments other than removing the branches entirely. I would recommend mulching your tree and giving it some supplemental water, this pruning job is going to cause the tree a lot of stress as it tries to produce a lot of wound wood.

This isn’t a cut. This is a terrible terrible job that is so beyond negligent.

Absolutely!!!

Hate to break it to you. You didn’t have an arborist.
MotownCatMom
Wow…just, wow. They did a hatchet job on that tree. SMDH. I’m not an arborist, but that looks really bad.
zaphydes
If the arborist you talked to was not the person who cut the tree, they need to know what their people are doing. They should send someone qualified out to fix it.
Agora_Black_Flag
I would call someone else to do it. If they did this once the clean up won’t be better.
Whatsthat1972
An arborist didn’t do that. Too many people are confusing the term “arborist “, with some dipshit with a chainsaw. Too many tree guys are using that term now. There are undoubtedly some good ones, but also a lot of nitwits.

lol those are very bad cuts. Even the best of us leave rips sometimes but not stubs.
