Monty Don has opened up about a harrowing experience when he was “lying on the floor for hours” due to an unexpected health issue. The beloved Gardeners’ World host recounted a challenge he faced while shooting for a Channel 4 programme, where the journey to sail around the British Isles brought him face-to-face with his sea sickness.
NHS defines sea sickness as a form of motion sickness triggered by repeated movements whilst travelling, where conflicting signals between the inner ear and the eyes prompt feelings of nausea. During a conversation on the Travel Diaries podcast, host Molly Rubenstein delved into Monty’s travel tribulations. He divulged: “I get very seasick, I’m really bad at sea.
“Funnily enough, the smaller the boat, the more I like it, so big boats don’t do it for me.” Recalling the filming woes, Monty shared: “We were filming, I was doing this travel thing around Britain for Channel 4 and, realising after half an hour that this wasn’t going to end well, [I was] trying to bribe the captain to go back to port.

“He said ‘well, even if I accepted your offer’, which he said was derisory, ‘there’s such a thing called tides, so I wouldn’t be able to go back in. I’d have to wait for the tides to dock’.”, reports Gloucestershire Live.
The ordeal culminated with Monty desperately enduring hours lying beside a bucket, subjected to the crew’s laughter. He said: “So I spent hours lying on a floor next to a bucket, just desperately, with the crew laughing. So that was pretty low on the list.”
The celebrity recalled a visit to India where he felt under the weather, stressing how travel to the country can impact “on one’s digestive system”. He noted: “There are details I would not wish to share with anybody but they are not good.”
Since launching his television career back in 1989 as a contributor to This Morning, Monty has been a familiar presence on our screens, presenting gardening programmes for both the BBC and Channel 4.
