This spring my rose of sharon completely bloomed, but then we had an unexpected snowstorm (yay New England). The flower buds turned brown. On one side they fell off and it eventually blossomed into leaves, but on the other side, the brown flower buds stayed. It's now July. Is half the bush dead? Did it'd go dormant thinking it was winter? When I did the scratch test on the branches, the half with the leaves is green and the half without is brown.

I would wait and just do a rejuvenation prune this winter.

It should be fine. Rose of Sharon are like weeds not much can kill them and they spread like crazy. Be careful what you wish for

Rose of Sharon’s are incredibly hardy. It will come back next year like nothing happened. You can prune the dead branches in fall to make it more visually appealing.

I hate those Rose of Sharon. They are messy and invasive species in many states in the US.
