A PROPOSED sensory garden for the Mungret community has been formally approved.

The facility, which will be located near Mungret’s existing park, will support both neurodiverse individuals and the wider community in nurting their mental wellbeing.

That’s according to metropolitan district leader, Cllr Daniel Butler, who has pledged thousands of euro of his own devolved funding to the project.

The City West polltopper, pictured below, initially had the idea last year.

“This is not just a project I support — it is one I initiated and am personally committed to seeing through from concept to completion,” he said.

“The sensory garden will offer a therapeutic, calming environment specifically designed to support those with autism and other neurodiverse needs — providing gentle stimulation through textures, scents, and sounds in a safe and welcoming space. But its value will extend to everyone. In a time when mental health has never been more important, the Mungret Sensory Garden will offer a tranquil place for people to reflect, recharge, and reconnect with nature,” Cllr Butler explained.

He added the garden represents more than just landscaping.

“It’s about building community, empathy, and wellbeing. It is a space that says everyone belongs, and that taking care of our mental health matters. I am proud to see this vision take root in Mungret,” concluded the Fine Gael councillor.
