Even for those with a passion for gardening and houseplants, choosing the right ones for the bathroom can be a challenge. While it’s typically easier to select plants for the garden or other areas of the home, such as the living room, one gardening expert has offered some advice on the “best plants for your bathroom.”

Michael Griffiths, also known as The Mediterranean Gardener online, boasts more than 300,000 followers on TikTok and Instagram. He regularly shares gardening tips and tutorials and, in a recent TikTok video, stated: “These are the best plants for your bathroom. Bathrooms can be tricky with different lights and humidity levels, but for all types of bathrooms, I’ve got you covered.”

He then went on to share his recommendations.

Snake plant

For bathrooms with low light and low humidity, Griffiths suggests a snake plant or ZZ plant. According to The Spruce, snake plants are “one of the most popular house plants.”

They are extremely drought-tolerant and can “go weeks without water in low and medium lighting conditions”.

As snake plants tolerate low light, they’re often found in office buildings, says the home improvement organisation.

The Spruce highlights that snake plants, available in dozens of varieties with stiff, sword-like leaves in shades of green, yellow, and cream, are a “hard-to-kill plant”.

This makes them an ideal choice for novice plant parents or those who prefer not to water their plants weekly.

Peace lily

Griffiths added: “If you’ve got low light and high humidity, then a peace lily or a pothos could be a great choice.”

According to Gardeners World, the peace lily is a popular, low-maintenance houseplant characterised by its glossy green leaves and white flowers known as spathes.

Gardeners World shared on its website: “Native to Central America, it thrives in a warm, humid environment and is perfect for growing in a bright bathroom. Peace lilies are easy to grow and relatively trouble-free.”

For bathrooms with high light and low humidity, Griffiths suggested an aloe vera or jade plant would be “perfect.”

Aloe vera plants are slow-growing, stemless succulents with thick, fleshy green leaves.

They’re renowned for their medicinal properties, especially the soothing gel used to treat sunburn, minor cuts, and other skin irritations.

Aloe vera plants require bright, indirect sunlight to flourish, making a sunny window sill or shelf the perfect spot.

Crassula ovata, more commonly referred to as the jade plant, is a succulent that produces small pink or white flowers.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) suggests cultivating it in a conservatory or as an indoor plant in cactus compost pots placed in full light.

Boston fern, spider plant or rubber plant

Griffiths also recommended the Boston fern, spider plant, or rubber plant for bathrooms with high light and humidity.

The Boston fern, also known as the sword fern, is a classic houseplant found in many tropical regions worldwide.

Spider plants are characterised by their thin, variegated leaves that arch outwards from the centre, creating a foliage fountain.

The rubber plant is a robust, fast-growing houseplant with large, glossy dark green leaves that are oval-shaped.
