Ever wonder why some watermelon farmers stick toothpicks into watermelon stems?
Actually, this genius trick saves watermelons. By doing this, farmers reduce the water supply and nutrients going into the watermelon.
After a long dry period, when sudden heavy rain comes, the watermelon absorbs too much water. As a result, the sugar gets diluted, making the watermelon less sweet.
Also, since the watermelonโ€™s outer skin canโ€™t stretch, the internal water creates high pressure, which cracks the watermelon.

  1. The old men here in mississippi used to syringe there watermelons at the nipple and put sugar water in there to make it more sweet. There all past away now and I dont think anyone knows that trick.

  2. While this might not be a great solution watermelons are native to the Africans deserts so it is true that they explode with high rains when forming tho a toothpick isnโ€™t going to do much itโ€™s just Mother Nature and you have to have the right environment and the right luck

  3. Any one wonder?…excuse me did anyone else not know that they stuck toohpicks in the stems to begin with? Even if its not accurate.

  4. We're watermelons like this always or were they bred like this for reasons like more sugar, seedless, and other reasons?

  5. I grow em for conpetition. None of this is true. Melons crack cuz of lack of nutrients or a drought/heat. The toothpick thing was supposed to cause the plant to rebuild itself around the wound which would increase waterflow and nutrients to the melon but its been proven nonsense. Want to know a thing that works? Only have one melon on a specific vine. Not per plant, per vine and you want it to be the closest melon to the root.
