I try to do my “culling” when my plants get their second set of leaves,I then evaluate and cull the least healthy. At the point you’re at I usually attempt transplanting to manage overcrowding since all the plants are pretty healthy and a bit more mature, you may not have the room though.

The plants don’t need giant roots. Can’t tell how deep the container is, but if you give the leaves/vines room to sprawl and you water daily you should be fine.

5 years ago I threw some pumpkins to the horses outback near their water trough. Got a patch by Oct. Every year they return. The horses don’t eat the leaves nor the fresh growing pumpkins so it’s a fun annual festival…
