This guy is about 3 years old and I’ve been hesitant to chop out of fear, but it’s almost reaching my ceiling so it’s come to a time where I can no longer put it off lol.

I would love to encourage branching. I know this basically looks like a stick with a bunch of leaves at this point. My question is where would you make the cut?

Would you recommend any growing paste to help encourage branching? Should I notch the main branch where I would like it to start branching?

Also, he stands up on his own, the support you see from the ceiling is to make sure he doesn’t get jostled around too much by my dogs if they knock the door into him. See dog in photo for example lol)

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

I do give him a good shake every once in a while to help the branch get stronger. I water completely when the soil is dry. I use Jack’s Classic Houseplant Special food.

I would chop at about 4 feet with clean pruners on an angle right below a leaf node. I would wait a few weeks if you wanted to notch it. The piece you cut off I would dip in rooting hormone and stick in a small pot of dirt water per usual. Don’t forget to fertilize weekly during spring and summer as potted plants do not get nutrients since they aren’t in the earth.

If you want to keep its current height, grow more branches and a thicker trunk….you just “always” pluck terminal buds off..more buds(become branches) will grow along the trunk…..

Or,chop it back..just keep 2/3 of its height

..and you may put it outdoor during this Summer
