Certified in February 2024, B Crop Austin Design Works looks back on the past year in a new impact report released this week.

The report discusses its impact on the community over the last 12 months since becoming one of 50 certified B Corps in Gloucestershire.

Architect Vanessa Gecheva says any decisions made with a community impact should now align with the company values beyond that of profit.

“Being part of a B Corp means designing with purpose— creating spaces that don’t just serve their function but contribute positively to the environment and the people who use them.”

The rural design specialist has partnered with two non-profit organisations, City Farm Shares Time Back and Nailsworth town council, in 2024-25.

As part of Nailsworth in Bloom, the third generation family business created a rose garden, with a commemorative arch and pergola.

It is also actively looking to encourage future tree canopy cover with new tree plantings, alongside structural elements as part of its new textiles heritage planting scheme.

Associate director Carole Crawshaw comments:

“A feeling of satisfaction, knowing you are working with colleagues who share a common goal and who care deeply not only about the product that comes out of the office, but the impact of the business on the environment and our community.”

In collaboration with community volunteer organisation Fair Shares, Austin Design Works is working to re-design The City Farm, as part of a project with the charity The Friendship Cafe. The farm building was originally created in 1998, providing youth and community based activities.

The company plans to repurpose one building to become a new reception area and reptile centre. Additionally, the building will be retrofitted in a bid to increase energy efficiency, visitor comfortability and boost revenue.
