they are ground cover plants so i would not at all be surprised if it’s a root. they usually root at or try to root at every node as they creep along the ground
It’s the Ryzome and looks like it was trying to produce new roots or flower! Perhaps it decided it didn’t have enough energy part of the way through and stopped
