How do you get leaves with more holes? There seems to be a lot of misinformation about this and, from my analysis, it’s probably because of miscommunication: it is often said “the leaves will develop more holes as it matures”. To clarify, this means with subsequent leaf generations, the newer leaves will emerge with more perforations (provided the plant has good growing conditions). It is NOT that one leaf starts unperforated and becomes more “holey” as it ages. If you look at my previous picture, notice how the lowest leaves are smaller and less perforated than the higher, newer leaves – if the latter were true, the biggest perforated leaves should be at the base of the plant. Also, if you are lucky enough to own a thriving monstera, look at a new leaf unfurling – it already has its perforations. Other than the right light and watering, one factor that seems to encourage newer leaves to be perforated is to support the vine for upward growth. This applies to all monsteras and even pothos and philodendron. (Note: no adansonii leaves were harmed in the making of this collage)
