Timestamps. This is my daughter’s garden I build last year. I helped build a cattle panel dog fence and planted some spring crops for March/April. This is what we accomplished in her first spring garden. This is the garden will built last year in the fall.

  1. I have a question. I don't have gutters on my home. But I have a samp section bout 2' wide and about 10-15' long but when it rains it floods. The water recedes decently fast but I'm scared to plant anything there. Is there anything I cn plant tht cn handle flooding or sitting water. I live in Mississippi so it don't rain a lot during the summer just spring.

  3. Hi Gary,

So far, my gamble is paying off. My tomato plants have more than doubled in size, and a few of them are flowering. The leaf lettuce is of harvestable size, but I’m going to wait a week for it to get bigger. The Romaine lettuce is still a couple weeks away from harvesting full size heads.

Early spring heat has caused a problem though. All of my Pak Choi is bolting to flower. None of it is salvageable, except as treats for the chickens. They love it. So far, no signs of bolting with the broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. The cabbage variety I planted is heat tolerant, so it will probably be okay. Today is the last day of a four day heat wave, 86F-87F degrees. Then it is back to the 60s and low 70s for a week.

The chard, snow peas, mustard, radishes, carrots, and parsnips are all doing great, so are my herbs, chicory, comfrey, oregano, dill basil, parsley, rosemary, cilantro, spearmint, peppermint, and marjoram.

Every Sugar Baby watermelon seed that I saved from last year have sprouted, and the cantaloupe seeds have started sprouting. They, my cucumbers, and sunflowers will be transplanted in about two weeks.

I transplanted alyssum, cosmos, and bachelor button into my garden, and still have amaranth, zinnias, purple cone flowers, and peppers to plant. In a few weeks, I’ll sow seeds for Round Zucchini, Gold Zucchini, Gray Zucchini, and Italian Striped Zucchini. That will pretty much complete my garden until closer to summer when I plant Blue Lake and Yellow Wax beans.

My Seascape are going nuts putting out fruit. Every plant is putting out a lot of berries. I’ll get my first strawberry of the season in about a week. Alabama 7A.

  4. Very informative, especially about water soluble fertilizer in woody potting mix. No matter what I buy it seems to contain wood. So for me to add a 20/20/20 chemical water soluble fertilizer, it will help break that down before I plant? Thanks Gary!

  5. Hi Gary! You were planting the peas 2-3 per hole. If they came up would you thin them down to one? Or let whatever came up continue to grow up the trellis? Thanks!
